Who is art therapy for?

Art therapy is suitable for people of all ages dealing with a variety of issues. Through the process of making art in a  safe therapeutic environment, people can feel relief from physical symptoms and pain, decrease stress, express and release emotions, help recover from traumatic experiences and losses; and gain self-knowledge and insight.

Do I need to bring art materials?

All art and play materials are provided.

Will the art be analyzed?

All art expression is welcomed and valued as a reflection of a person's self and experience.  Marijan's role is to witness and help facilitate people's expression and support the meaning and understanding they give to that expression. As well, people often find the process or experience of creating art –choosing colours, manipulating clay, or moving a brush over paper- to be more important than the final product.

What if I can't draw and am not artistic?

The focus of art therapy is not on creating or analyzing an artistic masterpiece, so no art skills or experience is necessary. All that is needed is an interest and curiosity.  Art therapy is about the process, the tactile experience of using basic art materials, and on the meaning and insight the art-maker gives to their creation..

Do I have to make art?

No. There is no requirement for people to do art if they are not interested. Marijan works with each client to determine the approach(es) that best meets their needs and comfort level.
